What a shock.
Democratic gubernatorial candidate Deval Patrick’s support of a plan to allow communities to create new local taxes turned Ken’s Steak House into a partisan battleground yesterday.
As the Geekwife so aptly put it, of course he's in favor of this. This would allow the town to reduce property tax by adding other taxes everywhere else. The Patrick could crow about how much he's "reduced the tax burden" despite the fact that it has simply shifted.
Healey, now the lieutenant governor, said taxpayers cannot afford the local option taxes plan Patrick supports, which would allow cities and towns to create their own taxes on items such as meals, parking, entertainment and billboards.
"I guess anything you look at should be taxed as well," Healey quipped about the billboards possibility.
In other words, shift the tax burden from property owners, at least nominally, the well off, to anyone who eats, parks or goes out to a movie or a ball game. Oh yeah, great plan.
Please elect Kerry Healey.
