Trust Through Hormones

I'm a fairly rabid supporter of science. That said, this type of research seems just a bit scary, if only because of its subtlety.

I'll never forget the night that Geekwife and I took a train into NYC, arriving at 2AM. I could barely keep my eyes open when this guy appeared in front of us, helping with the bags to move us to a cab. He carefully got us situated so that the bags were in the cab, the cabbie was in his seat, Geekwife was in her seat and I was blearily trying to open a door to get in. He quickly explained that this was a cab service, not the usual individual driver and that I should pay him the fee. Away went my money, away went the guy. The Geekwife and I took the train home with the our last two dollars (and all our bags and a new lesson in humility).

Imagine how much worse scenarios like that might be if the guy could also spray a bit of hormone around ahead of time. The article did say that the peak vulnerability was 50 minutes after it was administered. Still, that guy got the money he wanted with no technology involved. Insert P.T. Barnum quote here.

I wonder how difficult it is to produce?

First, would you consider the first comment on this entry as unadulterated self adveritising? Does anyone know this person? I went to the blog and found nothing relevant to the topic. So, I won't be going there again.
(whoops, is my misanthopy showing?)

Well, that article is a bit sick. I was particularly disturbed by this statement:
"At the same time, he added in an interview, politicians and marketers were probably already triggering the natural release of oxytocin in the brains of audiences through their campaigns."

I don't know about anyone else, but Politicians certainly don't trigger trust. Loathing mostly, sometimes fear, and once and a while out right anger. But trust isn't in the top 100 emotions that I would attribute to a politician.

Isn't the recipe for this stuff having something to do with grinding 100 virgins in a blender?
