Salon has letters about the dodgeball article. All I can really say to most of them is, time to develop an epidermis. Jr. High was pretty horrifying, but lordy, move on.

My dodgeball confession is this... I remember enjoying it, but I don't remember if I was good or bad at it. My guess is I was in the middle. I likely lasted longer than many at least some of the time. I don't remember ever taking revenge on somebody, or feeling like any of the players was being over-the-top mean to any other player. But it was a long time ago, so who knows?
As for the letters, I'm betting that most of the writers who think dodgeball is evil are out-of-shape non-athletes who probably don't like sports, period, especially competitive ones. I think reader Jeff Weiss had it right. Dodgeball (like all PE vs. competitive sports) should not have overwhelming losers who are just pummelled daily. That doesn't teach a love of athletics, and that's where the teacher should step in to even up the odds in some way. But to ban it from school seems ridiculous.
I've already said I was only in it to hurt people. Specifically those that enjoyed pummeling others.
But then, I'm not quite right.
