Punish that Firearm

To access the times story

Nothing, but nothing, is going to bring back someone that has been murdered. The survivors are frequently filled with grief and lash out or latch on to the strangest things. Punishing the inanimate object seems to be the latest. So, anti-gun organizations are jumping in with a great idea, punish the gun. The idea that selling guns used in or confiscated during crimes is "putting them back on the streets" is simply silly. Small town police departments simply don't have the large tax base of a Boston or a Worcester. They have to make ends meet in some manner. Selling items that have been confiscated is a pretty common practice. But suddenly, in the last few years, as anti-gun groups get more & more ramped up emotionally, we're going to punish the guns rather than sell them.
You do know that this was a common practice in the "good old days" of the middle ages. It was called deodand. I don't know. Call me silly, but I find the idea of reintroducing outmoded practices from the middle ages seems terribly backward.

So, If you're in Maine and you have a family member killed by a car, do they destroy the car? How about if they jump off a building, do the demolish the building.

I love this quote in particular.
quote.............
William Harwood, a gun control advocate in Maine, and Robert M. Schwartz, executive director of the Maine Chiefs of Police Association, said the original proposal was for all crime guns to be destroyed. But because of the state's strong hunting lobby, they said, the final law included only handguns used in homicides.

"To be candid," Mr. Harwood said, "the legislation had as much symbolic importance as it does deterrence."
Unquote..........

Deterrence? What Bloody Deterrence you moron? It's bloody inanimate object. How do you deter an inanimate object from action? And does a criminal care about having a gun destroyed? Not likely.

I don't see any issue with destroying the gun for emotional solice to the victim or their family. But then, Don't tell me that it will help minimize crime.

Another issue is what if the gun was stolen? What does the former owner do when the gun is destroyed? If a car owner's car is stolen and used to kill they at least have the insurance or get the vehicle back.

More stupid laws by stupid people.
