I generally loathe the ACLU. Rarely do they make a stand that isn't following the PC line of the extreme liberal left. But this proves that they just don't have a clue.
The American Civil Liberties Union filed the lawsuit Friday in the U.S. District Court in Jefferson City, Mo., on behalf of the fundamentalist Westboro Baptist Church, which has outraged mourning communities by picketing service members' funerals with signs condemning homosexuality.Makes you wonder about the logic behind this. What next? Probably start defending the right to yell fire in a crowded theater.
The church and the Rev. Fred Phelps say God is allowing troops, coal miners and others to be killed because the United States tolerates gay men and lesbians.

This action by the ACLU looked on its face, so outrageous, I scanned some of the ACLU's testimony before the legislature, prior to the bill that was passed recently.
The bill was aimed specifically at stopping the disgusting activities of this phony church. Here are some clips from the testimony:
“In its current form, Senate Bill 578 prohibits any person from picketing or protesting any church, cemetery, or funeral establishment within one hour prior to the commencement of any funeral, and until one hour following the cessation of any funeral.”
(I guess this law would restrict protests over a Veterans’s death due to inadequate body armor, or from friendly fire, ala the Pat Tilman cover-up.) The testimony continues:
“The American Civil Liberties Union of Kansas and Western Missouri and the American Civil Liberties Union of Eastern Missouri respectfully urge the Members of the Missouri Legislature to reconsider the current wording of Senate Bill 578, and amend it to better reflect a piece of legislation that will protect constitutional rights, and at the same time, respect the grieving rights of the family members of the deceased”.
(Now maybe there is no reasonable compromise legislation that was offerred and considered before the legislature acted; what do you think?)

Personally, I think this will all end up at the federal level and the legislation will be thrown out. Sadly, the legislation, as I've heard reported, doesn't forbid the protests, but puts boundaries on where they can do it and at least provides reasonable protections to those who have lost a family member.
There seems to be far too great a right given to unreasonable speech in this country at this time, and Phelps and his pack of jackals are a perfect example of speech that is intended to incite. They deny that, but a reasonable person doesn't show up at a soldiers funeral and say his death was the will of god and all that associated rot.
I'm not one to advocate the use of violence, wait... Yes I am. If this bill goes down I'd say people should use their freedom of expression by putting these scum bags in the hospital on a regular basis. I'm not claiming this as a reasonable action. But then, Phelps and his ilk aren't trying to be reasonable.

I am, reluctantly, a supporter of the ACLU. I just wish they counted 10 amendments in the bill of rights instead of only 9. "1,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10... Yep only nine in there. No need for the #2, nope, no second amendment that I can see, no way, no how." If they treated that one as absolutely as they treated all the others, I'd be a great fan and defender of them. Yes, they're supporting complete scum like Phelps when they protect his speach, but laws like that should exist.
