French Surrender to Students/Unions

No great surprise here.

President Jacques Chirac has bowed to student and trade union pressure by withdrawing an employment law that triggered protests and strikes across France.

The U-turn is a blow to Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin who staked his reputation on the proposals, which were intended to cut France's rampant youth unemployment.

Mr Chirac's office said a new plan focussing on youths from troubled backgrounds will replace the "first job contract," which would have made it easier for employers to fire any worker aged less than 26.

Well, Chirac certainly will stay popular no matter the consequences to Frances economy.

Makes you wonder who runs the country, the government or the unions.

Hey, Chirac held out longer than I expected him to. He must have had an uncle (no direct family of course) who fought & died at Verdun along with every other Frenchman who had a spine.

You know, nothing quite says "surrender" like "Frenchman."
