Russia Downgraded to Not-Free

Freedom House has down graded Russia. I suppose that shouldn't be a surprise. Its the only country to be down graded this year.

This seems bloody harsh. I understand that the Russians are floundering. I really wish we would engage them a bit more, help them along. Everyone talks about the Chinese & the EU, but of all the countries in the world that we really want on our side, Russia is it. They were, at one time, a super power. They could be again. Better to make them into our kind of super power than to let some scary-ass fascistic type of government (like the old USSR) take over.

Agreed. I believe that is why Bush is walking the fine line of letting Putin deal with his country his way. I do agree that they have taken a big step backward though. I think that the Chechnyan Terrorists did win in the reactions they got to Beslan. Putin has done a great disservice to Democracy in the powers that he has taken.

Will Russia recover? I don't know.
