Just a reminder that the male spawn wants us to build one. Could be fun, could be a slog. I'll have to work on the plans & get the materials together anyway. The female spawn wants to know what colors we're going to use to paint it... If anyone thinks that there are not genetic differences between boys & girls...

We had a tree house as kids. My father built us a stable platform and then dumped a pile of wood, a can of really rusty and bent nails and a couple of 18th century hammers that mostly stayed together for at least 3 strikes. It was the build as you go plan. It was fun from that side of it. Paint was never an issue.
Unfortunately you can't do that anymore. I'd suggest making something that is pretty much kid proof, but won't be a complete abomination when they don't want to use it any more. Something you can go and sit in and smoke cigars when the honeydu list isn't top priority.
Oh, and keep it well hidden. Camoflage is a better paint job than pink, purple or any other sundry colors that the daughter may desire. You will have to see it when there aren't leaves on the trees and a big pink treehouse is liable to cause the neighbors, no to mention you, to go into seizures.
Now, what type of construction?
I've done some looking around on various web sites, and I'm leaning towards the two tree method, mount a base on each trunk & then cross pieces between the trunks, unattached to allow for wind. Other than that... I'm open.
