Schumer Screwing Around About SCOTUS

What in the Hell is Schumer playing at?

Sen. Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) floated the most specific, if unusual, suggestion: He proposed that Bush temporarily fill the Rehnquist vacancy by asking O'Connor "to stay on as chief justice for, say, a year."

Appearing on ABC's "This Week," Schumer said: "At a time when the nation needs unity and stability more than ever, she would bring it, and it would be a breathtaking choice."

O'Connor has said she will stay on the court until her successor is confirmed. She has given no indication that she would be interested in Schumer's suggestion.
Not that this is a reasonable suggestion. O'Connor said she's done and trying to get her to stay for no really good reason, other than he wants to delay filling the positions is pretty much obvious. Stability would be satisfied by filling the positions.

Here is an interesting blog on putting Roberts up for Chief Justice. Less fights seeing that Roberts is already up for associate, but now Bush has placed him up for Chief, I think I like the nomination. It's going to be uglier than ever though.

You may also wish to look at How Appealing. They've got quite a massive selection of links to many commentary out there on the topic.

My suggestion is this. With another opening in the Supreme Court and Roberts still not confirmed, Bush should next nominate someone REALLY conservative and scary. That'll make Roberts look more firepower for the scary guy. Roberts gets confirmed, they can fight over the scary guy for awhile, then Bush can withdraw that nomination and nominate the more moderate candidate that he wanted in the first place.
