I guess justice in this case won't be served.
Leaders in the region and in Western Europe immediately expressed regret that he would never be convicted for his role in the disintegration of Yugoslavia and in the four wars in the region during the 1990's. The death also presented a profound setback to United Nations prosecutors and scholars who have sought to put together a definitive account of the wars.I've a feeling that the definitive account of the war wasn't going to happen in any case. History usually needs some time to bring out all the facts. But then, how the trial was proceeding, they were reaching a long enough separation from the events.
"It's sad that justice in a way has been cheated," said Lord David Owen, a former peace envoy in the Balkans, in an interview with the BBC. "He was the first head of state to be given a trial, he's been given a very fair trial, it's taken an extraordinarily long time."
Let's just hope Saddam isn't so fortunate.
