Maybe it's a good thing, though I'm not sure I can see the reasoning for his leaving now.
Bush, reaching into the administration of his father, said that former CIA Director Robert Gates would replace Donald H. Rumsfeld as defense secretary.To the end, Bush defended Rumsfeld's troubled tenure, calling him "a patriot who served this country with honor and distinction."
There will now be a chorus of cheers from the Monday morning defense secretaries as to why this was a wonderful thing. Let's hope that Gates doesn't bugger up the DoD when it has been heading somewhere near the right direction. (I don't really expect that it will turn straight into the path needed, but I can dream.)
