USS Heinlein

Looks like there was a flair of activity that we missed last month. The new guided missile destroyer series (DDG Zumwalt Series) has had some suggestions for new names.
If Robert A. Heinlein's fans get their way, the second destroyer in the Zumwalt Class series, the DDG 1001, will be named in his honor.
Although Mr. Heinlein was a 1929 graduate of the US Naval Academy and served as a loyal officer in the US navy, he is better known for his accomplishments as an author. He was born on July 7th, 1907 and passed away in 1988. As many of his supporters have said, wouldn't it be a fitting triubute to announce the USS Robert A. Heinlein on his 100th birthday?

USS Zumwalt.com posted a poll several months ago to test the public's interest in the DDG 1001's name. There was limited support for the names listed, like USS Boorda and USS Kelso. However on August 18th several independent Usenet and blog messages were posted encouraging Heinlein fans to come to the website and voice their support for the late naval officer and author. An eclectic range of fans, from Fermi Lab to Harley-Davidson, responded and they've written-in their support for the USS Robert A. Heinlein.

USSZumwalt.com is not affiliated with the US Navy, however dozens of hits from Navy domains are recorded monthly. No doubt someone in an official position will get the message!
Now that is a really cool idea.
